Dr. Paulson completed his program at Indiana State University with a PhD in Technology Management with a Digital Communication specialization. His research dissertation looked at the relationship of experience to project task complexity and the likelihood of success. His work here contributed to developing the communication method upon which his "Beyond Chat" books series is based.

After working in Silicon Valley for nearly 10 years, Ed earned an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin with an Entrepreneurship focus. The combination of this advanced business education with his intense prior experience taught him how to successfully apply key business concept for practical results. This degree started him down the path of relating media richness to jobs, people and communication success.

Leveraging off of his bachelor degree, Ed acquired an advanced structural engineering degree from UIC working in an elite biomechanics group where his focus was on developing a finite element model of the human inter-vertebral disk. This included original research digitally modeling the interface between the vertebral body and incompressible nucleus. This background helped him land a job working for GenRad in Santa Clara as a regional sales manager and special liaison to Structural Dynamics Research Corporation in Cincinnati, OH.

Fresh out the Army, Ed studied at The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) while also supporting himself as a cabinet maker, forklift driver, theatre lighting technician and eventually renovating houses on the north side of Chicago. He has always had a fascination with technology in general and electricity in particular and his studies helped him learn the rules by which nature works. Equally important it turned him into a professional problem solver which permeates almost all of his work and writing. Concepts can be powerful, but he is always focused on HOW the concepts help solve a problem and make things better.
While running his software training company in Austin, TX Ed became a Microsoft Certified Trainer for Windows 95, Windows NT, TCP/IP, and Access.
Also while running his software training company in Austin, TX Ed wrote a series of CorelDRAW! training manuals that were certified by Corel Corporation for use in their Certified Training Centers. Ed was also a Certified Trainer and served as a judge for the international art contest held annually in Ottawa, Canada. This was a lot of fun and exciting work.
Ed became licensed as a Professional Engineer in Texas in 1993 and maintained his license for several years after that.
It was Ed's honor to be nominated for consideration as the Austin, TX Inc Magazine 1994 Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
